If the spots are relatively mild (and brown, rather than black), give it a taste test. Avocado contains a toxin called persin, but despite the rumors, avocado is not poisonous to dogs, nor likely to cats. This happens prior to the fruit beginning the ripening process.
If it's more of a shadow, it's safe.
It usually occurs on the upper sides of leaves, but can also develop on the undersides. If there are uneven squishy spots or obvious damage to the skin, it's probably bruised and brown inside.
